EBRD funds Ukraine port project

Last Updated September 01, 2009

The EBRD has lent US$37mn to the company developing a new container terminal in Ukraine’s largest port.

Odessa Terminal Holdco is developing the project, alongside its subsidiary Brooklyn-Kiev Port, which will operate the terminal at Odessa. The loan will let the companies increase the number of containers the terminal can handle and, they hope, encourage private-sector investment in the country’s port infrastructure.

In addition to the loan, the EBRD is acquiring a 5% stake in Odessa Terminal Holdco, which is owned by French container shipping group CMA-CGM.

Including this loan, the EBRD has now invested €700mn (US$1bn) in the Ukrainian transport infrastructure sector.
