Ghana is starting to flex its muscles after becoming the newest member of Africa’s oil club, but how will it become a major player? Mark Dunne reports.
Politicians rarely pass up the chance to publicise how they are improving the quality of life for their fellow citizens. Ghana’s president, John Atta Mills, is no exception. In December last year, he appeared on television dressed in blue overalls and a hard hat to publicly give the economy a massive boost. When he turned a valve on a platform some 40 miles off the coast of port town Takoradi, he made Ghana Africa’s latest oil producer.
