US$90mn needed to bring story of UAE warrior to the screen.

The world’s first shariah-compliant film fund has raised US$40mn only a month after announcing it was looking for backers, according to reports.

The fund, managed by Jason Marsh, looks to raise up to US$90mn to finance a film about a sixth-century Middle Eastern warrior.

Antar: The Black Knight tells the story of the son of an Arab prince and an African slave who successfully fought for his freedom.

Investors in the fund are believed to be from Europe and the Middle East and will receive the first 120% of box office ticket sales as well as a share of the DVD revenues. Shareholders will also be offered walk-on parts in the film.

Antar: The Black Knight will be shot in Morocco and released in 2012. It is planned to be the first in a trilogy of films.
