Moody's names South Africa head

New general manager to expand business in Sub Saharan Africa.

Moody’s Investors Service, a provider of credit ratings, research and risk analysis, has appointed Jacques Els as general manager of its South Africa office.

Based in Johannesburg, Els takes up the role immediately, succeeding Leon Claassen. One of his responsibilities will be to develop Moody’s business in Sub Saharan Africa.

Els joins from NM Rothschild & Sons, where he was director of debt advisory based in South Africa. He has also held senior positions in the South African operations of rating agency Fitch as well as Absa Capital, Citibank and Nedbank Capital.

Moody’s has operated in South Africa since 1994, establishing a permanent office in Johannesburg in 2003.
