Funding will go towards developing the country’s roads.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$144.89mn loan for the Ugandan road sector.

Financing to the tune of US$110.49mn came from the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional arm of the AfDB, with the remaining US$34.4mn coming from the Ugandan government.

The funding will go towards the paving of 135 kilometres of road, linking Kigumba, Masindi, Hoima and Kabwoya, in the underdeveloped west of the country. The project should create 1,200 jobs, 80% of which will be reserved for local communities.

According to the most recent World Bank statistics, published in 2010, around 23% of Uganda’s roads are paved. The average for sub-Saharan Africa is 18.85%.
