V. Shankar becomes bank’s most senior exec working in the Middle East.

Standard Chartered Bank has appointed V. Shankar as its new chief executive officer for the Middle East, Africa, the Americas and Europe, responsible for shaping the bank’s strategy and overseeing governance across those regions.

He will also continue in his current roles as executive chairman of principal finance and co-chairman of Standard Chartered’s private bank.

Shankar will be based in Dubai when he takes the new post on May 1, becoming the bank’s most senior executive working in the Middle East. Group CEO Peter Sands says the promotion shows the bank’s “commitment to the region, and ensures that our senior leaders are positioned across our key markets”.

Shankar, a Singaporean, has held several roles since joining the bank in 2001, including group head of corporate finance. In this role he helped to build the group’s M&A and advisory, structured finance and private equity businesses. He replaces Gareth Bullock, who retires from the bank’s board at the end of April.
