Former Bank of England exec to take over from Marcus Agius in November.

Barclays has announced that Sir David Walker will succeed Marcus Agius as chairman from November 2012.

Walker is currently a senior adviser to US bank Morgan Stanley, and was previously chairman at Morgan Stanley International.

During the past 30 years he has also acted as assistant secretary at the Treasury; executive director at the Bank of England; deputy chairman at Lloyds Bank; and chairman of the London Investment Bankers' Association.

Walker will be engaged in finding a new chief executive for Barclays following the resignation of Bob Diamond over a scandal surrounding the fixing of the LIBOR rate. Commenting on his appointment, he said: “The UK needs a strong financial services sector and Barclays has a crucial role to play in ensuring that this country has a successful, well-governed banking industry. My immediate priority, and critical to Barclays’ ongoing success, is the appointment of a new chief executive and I will be fully engaged in that process.”
